The stress hormone called cortisol can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system for instance it may lower the number of lymphocytes in the body. Research also suggests that anxiety hostility and other negative states affect the immune system.

Thus long term or chronic stress through too much wear and tear can ravage the immune system. Stress can also have an indirect effect on the immune system as a person may use unhealthy behavioral coping strategies to reduce their stress such as drinking and smoking. Indirectly stress can cause unhealthy coping mechanisms like binge eating drinking smoking etc which can also increase the risk of diseases.

Stress occurs when life events surpass your abilities to cope. Changing how we act can often break habits that trigger stress. In short spurts cortisol can boost.
